Whilst probably not the first country people think of central America, it’s a great place to visit if you’re looking for amazing wildlife, historic towns and of course, great beaches.
Although many travellers don’t have complete confidence in coming to Honduras due to it’s fairly high crime rate, there are many places you can come to and be completely safe, both on mainland Honduras and the islands that surround it.
So if you’re trying to plan a holiday to Honduras, which beaches should be on your must-visit list? Well, here are some of the top beaches and beachtowns that the country has.
Best Beaches in Honduras
Omoa, North Honduras
The small town of Omoa lies around 18km West along the coast from Puerto Cortes, and it definitely has the small local town feel. Though Omoa probably isn’t the majority of people’s first pick when coming to Honduras, it’s worth visiting.
The beach here is pretty amazing, and it’s one of the best you can find in Northern Honduras. Although it’s relatively small and cosy here, there’s still enough space that it doesn’t feel packed or busy, and a good restaurant and bar too.
Though many people don’t choose to come to the mainland when coming to Honduras, if you do intend to, then opting to go to Omoa may be a good idea. It’s a great place to spend some time whether you’re along of with family.
Tela, North Honduras
Another town to visit along the Northern coast of Honduras is Tela. This place is well known for Lancetilla Botanical Garden (7km South East of the town center), one of the most interesting places to visit in Honduras. Whilst you can fly into Tela, it’s less than an hour away from San Pedro Sula by car.
The entire area of Tela is lined with beaches here, and there’s many different areas where you can choose to go – the bay here is also named Tela, as well as the town itself. Here, you’ll find some of the best white sand beaches than Honduras has to offer.
It’s said that this area might be one of the best destinations to come to if you’re looking for a cheap Caribbean holiday. This is a great place to come for diving, as it has one of the biggest reefs in the Caribbean, and through the summer the water is calm and perfect for activities like this.
Whilst some people love to come to mainland Honduras, many people prefer to travel to the islands surrounding the country. One Honduran island that gets a lot of attention is Guanaja, which is just over 40km North of the mainland. And, it has some of the best beaches the country has to offer here.
Although these beaches are usually bundled altogether, there are some notable ones that you’ll definitely want to visit. This includes both Soldado beach at the further side of the island, and also Deena beach which is a little further along. It’s also definitely worth checking out Graham’s Place, a hotel just off Guanaja on it’s own tiny island.
Guanaja is the perfect place to visit if you’re looking for a more secluded beach where the most important thing is relaxation.
West Bay beach, Roatan
The largest of the bay islands that borders Honduras, Roatan has an array of beaches that are definitely worth paying a visit. Out of all of them, one of the most popular is West Bay beach.
Whilst typically Honduras is a place people come to relax, West Bay beach manages to combine a laid back atmosphere with the possibility to try a ton of different water activities here. You can do everything, from snorkelling (both during the daytime and at night) to more adventurous things, like scuba diving and paragliding too.
For many people looking for a beach, the most important thing to have is a clean and soft beach, with great amenities. This beach has pretty much everything you need, including some awesome food places just off the beachfront. This beach is the best combination of seclusion and having enough things to do to keep you busy. For that reason, it’s many people’s favorite Honduran beach.
One of the smaller islands off the North shore of Hinduras, Cayo Chachahuate makes up part of the Cayos Cochinos, which are a popular tourist destination here. Although the island is small, this is part of why it’s one of the most beautiful areas they have to offer.
The small village here is full of friendly folk, and it’s a fishing village at heart. What does this mean? Well, you’re going to be able to get some of the best seafood the country has to offer here. There’s only a hundred or so inhabitants on the island itself, so it really is a good place to getaway from everything. Make sure that you try the fried fish with coconut rice if you get the chance to.
Though some might not think there’s much to do here, this will be what a lot of people are searching for. You’ll need to take all your essentials with you, as there’s not much that you can actually get on the island itself. For those looking for a very natural and unspoilt island to visit, then Chachahuate is probably the right place for you.
In conclusion, you don’t need to leave the mainland of Honduras to enjoy some amazing beaches, however many of them are lying on the small islands that live just North of the mainland itself. There are many different options for you to choose from here, and whether you’re looking for somewhere with a bunch of activities or somewhere with absolutely nothing, there’s going to be an option for you here in Honduras.
